There are many differing grades of pearls from grades C to AAA grade pearls. Grade C pearls generally have poor lustre and a slight defects covering approximately 60% of their surface, Grade B pearls are medium luster with fewer defects than Grade C, Grade A have high or medium luster and may have some minor imperfections over less than 30% of the surface area, AAA Grade is the highest common classification and these high grade pearls are virtually flawless, there are also a number of slight variations that go above a Grade A which are AAA+ grade and AAAA Grade Pearls.

Pearls are available in a vast choice of colours and can be natural or colour enhanced. The most common natural pearl colours are tones of lavender, peach, pink, cream and white however yellow, silver, copper and black pearls can also be found in nature. Natural colour pearls often have rainbow overtones or peacock overtones or if they have a white base a strong pink or blue overtone is occassionally found in the finest grade pearls. Natural colour pearls usually have variances in colour across their surface and are rarely found in a single uniform colour. If a pearl has a uniform colour it is likely to be dyed. Matching full strands of naturally coloured pearls is incredibly difficult, especially with larger sized pearls, making full strands of big pearls in natural colours very valuable and highly coveted. There is no right and wrong when it comes to choosing a Pearl colour, only personal preference however pearls in natural tones will always be more valuable than dyed or colour enhanced pearls.
