Freshwater Pearls can occur naturally however the vast majority of freshwater pearls available in todays market are cultured freshwater pearls. Freshwater Pearls are created by implanting a nucleus into an oyster or mollusc which will cause the host to secrete nacre, coating the nucleus many times and forming the pearl. In a natural pearl this nucleus is usually a grain of sand or a small parasite. The quality of cultured pearls has developed to the point that natural freshwater pearls can often only be distinguished from cultured pearls using an X-ray.
The majority of the freshwater pearls sold by the Gemstone and Bead Boutique are cultured however we do also sell natural pearls.
