Coin Pearls

Coin Pearls are a type of genuine Freshwater Pearl which is cultured by implanting a disc shaped nucleus into a mollusc rather than a spherical shaped nucleus as with round freshwater pearls. Coin Pearls are available in a large variety of shapes and sizes with the traditional flat disc shaped Coin Pearl being the most popular for use in pearl jewellery design and other shapes such as Heart shaped Coin Pearls, Square Coin Pearls, Star shaped Coin Pearls, Triangular shaped Coin Pearls and other fancy shaped Coin Pearls becoming increasingly popular for unique designs.

Coin pearls are widely available in lower grades and many online pearl retailers can supply them. Our collection focuses more on high grade coin pearls and hard to find shapes. When buying coin pearls online you will need to make sure that you are comparing like for like. The size of the coin pearls is often not disclosed by online retailers however the size will make a huge difference to their value, with large coin pearls being more valuable and any sized over 15mm being very rare.

The next thing to look for is the thickness of the nacre; the thicker the nacre, the more valuable the coin pearl. The thickness of the nacre affects the size and shape of the pearl with thicker nacre pearls appearing fatter, as well as the lustre of the pearls with thick nacre coin pearls having better lustre.

Colour also plays an important role in the value of a strand of coin pearls with natural colours giving the pearls a slightly higher value than colour enhanced pearls. Occassionally, coin pearls can be found in rare natural colours and when these are found in matched strands these pearls are highly coveted and therefore more valuable.
